Emma, I have two friends who have owned (one still does) the earlier version, the D80, and got/get excellent results with it. I'm a contented Nikon user so can't imagine any of their cameras would disappoint, but have you handled alternatives from Canon, Sony, Samsung, etc? I originally chose a Nikon over a Canon by simply handling both and deciding the Nikon controls made more sense to me. I figured I was more likely to recall what each button and dial did when I was out 'in the field' without a manual handy and therefore less likely to miss a shot. The opposite may be true for you - there are many, many Canon owning photographers out there.
Hi Emma, im a nikon convert so a little biased, but i'm currently using a D80 with a nikkor lens and results are stunning, indeed I had the same with my first Nikon DSLR, a D40. I'd be honest and say go for a D80 first, i got a D80 body with less than 1600 actuations off a certain online auction site and its perfect for £200.And using it with my fave 18-70 nikkor and a circa 1976 46-85 and they both work fine. To be honest your paying around £200 more for a D90 with 2.1 megapixels more and that doesnt really matter.I used to get spot on 18x12 prints from the D40, and that was only 6.2mp.If it was me, i'd go for a D40 if youre thinking of small prints.Megapixels dont matter, its just the eye ;D But...Bonus of the D80 mind is lenses are cheaper too,you can use as well as the the AF-S,the AF-G and AF-D lenses also as the D80 has a built in focussing motor.D80, or D40...your choice! :O)
